Fot thos who haven’t paid attention, facebook recently started a pilot program called “Instant Personalization”, a partnership with Yelp, Pandora and docs.com. These websites would get access to all of your information without you having them as a friend or “liking” them. This would allow websites like Pandora to play the music you like (based on your interest) as soon as you enter the website. This could only happen if you allowed facebook to do so in your privacy settings. If you don’t allow facebook to do so they won’t have access. But it seems a bit complicated to opt out.
However, today when I logged into Facebook this thing popped up suggesting the pages based on my history, hometown primaryschool etc. This would make it “easier” for me to find these pages, in which i’m absolutely not interested, and add them to my friend list. I unchecked the boxes, facebook politely checked for me, because I don’t want to add those pages. But if you don’t add those pages you can’t fill in these interests. Basically Facebook is forcing you to add pages to your profile so it’s easier to link to everything. There’s no other option.
Well done.
